10-week class starting January 19, ending in March.
Classes are RARELY cancelled due to weather (snow or ice). However, the YMCA does have Snow Emergency Policy. Please use your own discretion for your personal safety. While it is preferable to never miss a class (especially the first 5), instructors will catch you up upon your return.
ATTIRE FOR THE CLASS
Instructors recommend wearing a swimsuit or synthetic swim shorts and a shirt, remember: no cotton. It does get chilly so a thermal short sleeve shirt is helpful to maintain warmth and prevent chafing. Water shoes or sandals can be worn if desired. Be sure to bring a towel. While the facility is not open during class, participants have access to the locker rooms to change and shower.
WHAT ABOUT GEAR?
PFD, helmet, spray skirt, paddle, or boat? No need to bring it the first day of class. Leave it at home and let us know what you own.
If you have not purchased any gear – WAIT! Talk to us, start the class and try gear out first to see all there is to offer. There is PLENTY of kayaking gear available on the used market.
TAKE YOUR SKILLS ON THE WATER
Toledo River Gang offers moving water and whitewater instruction as a follow-up to this class (additional costs may apply). Join us on a whitewater or sea kayak trip after the class. Moving water classes are on the Huron River in Ann Arbor in April. The beginner / student whitewater trip is the last weekend in April at Slippery Rock Creek in Portersville, PA. South Bass Island Kayak Rendezvous (SBIKR) is the first full weekend (sea kayaking) trip in June.
